It thunks particularly onerous exactly as a result of Korine has, prior to now, confirmed himself a completely canny, succesful provocateur, whose work extra in truth mirrored the respective spirits of their age. Trash Humpers, from 2009, minimize towards the ascent of the glossy digital age with a crummy, lo-fi, shot-on-VHS experiment wherein he and three mates put on garish rubber masks, eat pancakes slathered in dish cleaning soap, and, sure, hump large baggage of rubbish.
Sleeker, however no much less trustworthy, was 2012’s Spring Breakers, which forged Disney Channel veterans Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens as teenage ladies gone wild, drawn into the thrall by a gangster named Alien (James Franco). For all its stupidity and extra, Spring Breakers knew that the tradition was changing into more and more obsessive about surfaces, and never substance, and it made an attractive advantage of its personal hollowness. Even the deserted Combat Hurt, conceived throughout the epoch of Tom Inexperienced, Jackass, Jerry Springer, and the WWE’s Perspective Period, was trustworthy about its ambitions: feeding the twinned needs for violence and self-harm.
There are moments of this astute, creative Korine in Aggro Dr1ft. (Who else would ever make this film, actually?) A severed head dripping blocky bits of blue blood, BO’s spouse twerking in a fishnet two piece—these are unmistakably singular, even poetic photos. However they’re too few, and much between. Even at 80 minutes, the movie is much less of a sensory assault than a slog, as eyes and thoughts rapidly acclimatize to its ostensibly alienating photos. On the danger of sounding like a philistine, shouldn’t a movie costarring a neon-orange Travis Scott smoking a blunt on a speedboat filled with mercenaries in demon masks be, effectively, extra enjoyable?
Aggro Dr1ft’s post-movie ambitions could in the end be vindicated, if solely by default. As of this writing, it has not secured a standard distributor, and rumors abound that Korine could distribute the movie himself, through the EDGLRD web site. (It can actually play higher streaming inside a classic RealPlayer window, or projected on a wall of a nightclub throughout a rave fueled by sketchy ecstasy, or tub salts.)
“The outdated world is over,” BO declares early on. Perhaps he, and Korine, are proper. Perhaps the films are on life assist, slogging via some lengthy interregnum, ready for some new, recent type to interchange it. However Aggro Dr1ft isn’t it. It exists on the boring (like, actually very boring) facet of a dying medium. Not on the bleeding fringe of some new one. When that new type, no matter it’s, arrives, Korine will doubtless carve out a fruitful function increasing its visible palette. However with Aggro Dr1ft he broke his personal golden rule: He threw the primary punch.
